Welcome to Myotis Bat Ecology & Tuition

About Myotis Bat Ecology

Myotis Bat Ecology is run by Jean Oudney, who is a freelance bat ecologist based in Blairgowrie, Perthshire.  She has carried out bat surveys for the past ten years while studying for her biology degree, training and obtaining her licence under the respected zoologist Dr Susan M Swift before setting up her own business in 2017.

Jean also enjoys being asked to give talks on bats and beavers to local communities and groups, bringing along some special licenced "props"!  She does extensive voluntary work with bats and beavers, rescuing & rehabilitating injured bats across Tayside and training new volunteer bat carers. Alongside her own survey work, Jean often works with several other ecologists as a subcontractor for bat surveys and guided walks.

Jean has been a trustee of the Scottish Wild Beaver Group for the past 10 years and has served on the committee of Tayside Bat Group for the past 9 years, currently holding the position of treasurer and often runs events such as bat walks and talks.

Working with other volunteers, Jean has also been responsible for organising events such as bat care training days, two nationwide SWBG beaver conferences and the very successful and popular Scottish Grass Sickness Show, a large charity horse show which raised over £23,000 between 2010-2019.  In 2017 she was presented the Heidi Award for outstanding support in fundraising for the Equine Grass Sickness Fund.

About Myotis Tuition

Along life's journey Jean discovered a passion for teaching, something many people had told her in the past while working towards her British Horse Society exams in her early working life as a professional groom.

She returned to university to study for the masters level Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) in Biology with science, completing a very enjoyable probationary year teaching at McLaren High School in Callander before becoming a fully qualified teacher registered with the General Teaching Council of Scotland in 2022.  In 2023 Jean joined the Moore House Group as a part time biology teacher at their Dunkeld campus, a private school that specialises for neurodiverse children.

Realising that many teenagers need extra practice with biology in addition to their time in school to build their confidence (especially after the disruption to their education during Covid), Jean also operates as a part time professional tutor based in Blairgowrie and Stirling, offering top class biology and environmental tuition.
